Board FAQs
What are the requirements to serve on the Board?
Board members must be voting members of the congregation. The most important element of Board service is a commitment to and availability for serving the congregation in alignment with Wildflower’s mission and strategic goals. A Board member should be willing to grow, learn new skills, and be open to spiritual growth to help build our Beloved Community, with racial equity and social justice at the forefront of our congregational work.
What skills or experience are needed to serve on the Board?
The ability to work collaboratively in accordance with our Covenant for Beloved Community, and a demonstrated commitment to serving the congregation. The Treasurer should have a knowledge of accounting and financial practices.
What types of work does the Board do to support Wildflower?
Wildflower is autonomous and self-governing. The Board directs and manages the activities of the congregation in alignment with our strategic planning goals, mission, values, Bylaws, budget (approved by the congregation), and all applicable laws and regulations.
What are the Board positions?
President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, plus three (3) at-large positions
What is communication and time commitment?
Time available can be an issue; be prepared to understand what you can commit to and be honest in what you cannot. No one will judge you for it. Consider that about 10 hours per month is an absolute minimum, and there may be months that need close to 15 or 20 hours. Board members use email or group collaboration applications to communicate in between Board meetings. Note: Officers may have duties that require additional time.
What type of meetings/training/events are required and/or offered?
Board members should attend a Board retreat, twice monthly Board meetings in person or via group communication applications, as determined by the Board (a minimum of 4 Board members must be present), and the Winter and Spring Congregational Meetings. If Board members have not already attended Beloved Conversations, Jubilee or other training supporting the 8th Principle, Wildflower will provide an opportunity to attend this training. Board members are strongly encouraged to attend in-person services.
How are Board meetings structured?
Board meetings typically last for about two hours and use an agenda developed in advance with feedback from Board members. Soft Chair meetings may be planned or called for planning, discussions, or assignment of actions associated with the work of the Board. These could be held monthly and tend to be two hours.
How does the UUA support and connect to the work of Wildflower?
